Strike scene at Portage and Main, Winnipeg, Manitoba at 2:30 P.M., 10 June, 1919. |
An anti-strike alderman later testified to the Robson Royal Commission on the strike that special police were set out on the occasion shown in these photographs, to "test" who had "control of the streets". The day before, Mayor Gray had fired the City Police force. Two specials acting as traffic cops replace the familiar bobbies on this corner. They were heckled by pro-strike bystanders and men from the nearby pool hall above the CV cafe. After two hours, the gathering crowd blocked all traffic. The cars shown here may well belong to the Citizen's Committee Headquarters just to the south of the intersection. Only the well-to-do drove cars, and they were used to transport strikebreakers, Royal Northwest Mounted Police, and army officers or the Mayor Gray, who rushed to the scene. |
